A friend of mine with a 2005 Matrix, 160k miles, got a bad diagnosis today. Codes p0441 p0455 p0456 p0171 with the remedy of replacing the entire ECM and associated components for about $1200.
Anybody know if this problem can be resolved with a simple ECM swap or if there’s more to it? Seems it a common issue (see TCB here - !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) and the official Toyota remedy is a new ECM.
Just wondering if any of you good folks had a suggestion other than raiding the car repair savings account.

How many miles on the car?
This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emission Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.

Well over that. Around 120k, I think.

Original gas cap? The codes in the 4xx area get triggered from incorrect fuel tank pressure from a dried grommet on the cap sometimes. The 171 refers to something like “mixture too lean” or thereabouts. I’ve heard of this code getting triggered from leaks in the intske tract or intake manifold gasket. I know there is evidence to support the TSB but it may be worth a gas cap to see if some codes fall off.

You could try going on Car-part.com and get a used one for 1/5 of the cost or less. They refer to part as the “Computer Box Engine”
But before you do that, replace the gas cap and O2 sensors first if you haven’t done so already.
Then clear the codes and see if anything comes back.

And if you still have p0171, then do the intake manifold gasket:

It was basically “replace and program ECM and all ancillary components.” I haven’t seen the full work order though.
